Using WordPress

For those of you in the know, if you look carefully you may have realised that we use WordPress to build and manage our website. Website content management is something that is very close to my heart, as I’ve designed and built a corporate content management system (CMS) and helped to build many websites that use its functionality. That particular sledgehammer would not be suitable for manging the little nut, that is our website, so WordPress turned out to be a real asset in building the site.

Some people use WordPress hosting at wordpress.com website. However, being programmers, we wanted to be able to manage and alter our install of wordpress, so we chose to host our site with our favorite website hosting company, Gradwell, who also manage our VOIP. Just as an aside, I have been very impressed with Gradwell and would be happy to recommend them to anyone.

WordPress is a simple tool, and can be adapted (no coding required) to manage a website with an attached blog. For those of you who are techie, it gives access to the code (PHP, (X)HTML, CSS) of the theme you are using for editing through a simple form (textarea) interface. There are literally hundreds of themes that you can use to change the look and feel of the site and hundreds of plugins to add functionality. This simplicity and flexibility makes it ideal for a brochure website (like ours).
